Our Friends are at the heart of the RGS, offering support where it is needed most, sharing our success and helping to open the door to a new generation of RGS boys. The impact they make is evident.
We remain eternally grateful to our Friends of ... community past and present, our staff for their work in curricular and co-curricular activities, to our pupils for being fantastic ambassadors for the School, our alumni, and finally to our loyal supporters who have been steadfast friends.
RGS gratefully acknowledges the generosity of the Friends of ... and all those who have provided support this year.

Instrumental Lessons
We have one of the largest school choirs in the region with over 200 students singing every week, alongside a multitude of varying vocal and instrumental ensembles.
Over 250 weekly peripatetic lessons take place with our outstanding team specialist instrumental and vocal tutors, and the school has further financially supported Year 7 students wishing to learn a shortage orchestral instrument on a scholarship scheme.
There is an incredibly active musical calendar of events, with two large sold-out November and Spring Showcase concerts, a chamber Autumn Soirée, a traditional Carol Service in the local parish church, whole-school House Music Competition, and a Jazz in the Quad event in the Summer. The students have many opportunities to perform both in and outside of school, as there are annual visits to Oxford University to sing Choral Evensong, music tours to Salzburg thanks to a partnership with an exchange school, and numerous musical collaborations with schools across the country.
A highlight of the school year is the musical production, which continues to be hugely successful, welcoming young people from RGS and over ten neighbouring schools to perform in the cast and pit band, alongside the Stage, Sound and Lighting Team (SLST). We work alongside a professional Director and Choreographer, with ‘The Producers’ being performed in 2023.
Most of all, there is a strong sense of community within Music. Whether it’s before school, breaktime, lunchtime, or after school, the practice rooms are always buzzing with activity. Indeed, the department has traditionally had a reputation for educating some of the finest nationally-renowned performers, conductors and composers over the past century. We form close links with the Chiltern Music Academy, that run many of their senior ensembles here at RGS.
We help to financially and logistically support the Music Department, enabling them to offer opportunities well beyond what most state schools can offer. Click here to find out more.

As with all state-run schools, financial constraints are challenging, and, at an annual cost of around £18,000 to run cricket in the Summer Term, Friends of Cricket look to fund the cricket programme through parent donations, fundraising events and sponsorship. In 2022, this allowed us to invest in new indoor mats, wicket covers, an electronic scoreboard, Bola Pro bowling machine and a FrogBox camera & match streaming kit.
In addition to the ongoing running costs of the cricket programme, this year we are raising funds to replace the netting around our outdoor nets and modernise the batting equipment we can provide to boys who do not own their own kit.
If you would like to support the Cricket Programme, please click on the “Donate” button below. Alternatively, if you, or your business, are able to support us through sponsorship please contact us at RGSFOC@gmail.com.
Many thanks to all the staff, parents, boys and supporters of cricket at RGS for their continued generosity.

Rowing at RGS is for juniors between the ages of 13 and 18 and is a sculling club. It is very well supported by the school, parents of the boys as well as a team of committed and hardworking coaches. With a steadily growing interest from students as well as growth in the fleet available, the club currently has nearly 100 active members.
RGS Rowing is dedicated to creating a safe and supportive environment with the opportunity for the athletes to develop skills not only as scullers but also in time management, teamwork and a passion for a healthy life. As the members are learner-athletes the coaches at RGS are well informed and aware of the rigors that come with a growing child who has a full and active day and therefore are dedicated to ensure that this time is not wasted so that the boys are able to achieve at a high level at national events.

As with all state-funded schools, the financial situation for RGS is very challenging. The annual cost to run the rugby programme at RGS is approximately £65,000. This is met through a number of initiatives to generate additional revenue. About 95% is raised through subs, sponsorships, fund raising events, including the Sportsman's Dinner, Burns Night, Beer & Gin Festival and Comedy Night.
This is raised from the generosity of parents, individual donors who support the School through attendance at events and donations to the Friends of Rugby. Whilst funds are raised to ensure the School meets its annual financial commitments we are very proud to say that we were able to invest in the Gym project in 2019.
Annual subs are the second biggest revenue stream for FRoRGS after the Sportsman's Dinner and are essential to the rugby programme. We are incredibly grateful for gifts of all sizes and you can make your gift as a single payment or in instalments. Please don’t forget to complete the Gift Aid declaration to increase your gift by 25p for every £1 you give.
